In the North Tower the stairs were approximately 70 ft apart, compared to the distance of ft between the stairwells in the South Tower. For anyone higher than the 91st floor, escape was impossible, with one victim relaying to after the first plane hit that the stairs were inaccessible for the th floor. The modeling also suggested that if Stairwell B had remained intact through the entire building all 1, projected survivors could have evacuated with an additional 2 minutes to the total time. Many people began to evacuate via the stairs on their own, while others chose to wait for instructions from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
